Hey Guys...i was just thinking about when i was little and being home schooled myself. My mom pulled me out of elementary School in 5th grade because the teacher was going to fast for me and i couldn't understand the material he was presenting in the math lessons. Being home schooled for a year was a great experience for me. A lot of people think that when kids are home schooled they just watch t.v. all day and that can be true in some families i was taught all the subjects taught in a public school but it was done so at my individual pace and my mom included a morning devotional where we would read scriptures and sing a song to start the day before we started studying. Some of the things i learned a lot of people our age still haven't learned. If it wasn't for my mom pulling me out to mainly teach me math i would've HATED math at a very young age.
So my question to all of you is what your opinion of Homeschooling is? Have you been home schooled before? what was your experience like? do you know someone who was home schooled? Did it work for them? I just wanted to see what your thoughts were on this topic.

This is actually close to the subject of my research paper. I'm doing mine on the social development of home schooled kids vs. that of tradional. The more research I did the more I learned that there's a lot more to home schooling than the preconceived notions I'd had before. My best friend in Texas was home schooled and she loved it. It allowed her to work at her own pace. She wasn't socially inept, in fact, she was mature for her age and well behaved.
I was skeptic before, but the more I looked into the more I think it can be a great alternative to traditional schooling.
thats cool.. i was using it as a solution to overcrowded schools in my paper...It can be a very effective alternative to public school i agree...the only problem is that not everyone can do it...a parent is usually the one that takes the time to teach the children the curiculum and my mom was able to do it because she was a stay at home mom.... so students of parents that both work wouldn't be able to do this...so sad to think about...but not every educational solution will work for every student and family.
Actually, i have never been home schooled before. I think that if a child gets homeschooled they need curriculum and assignments just like regular school. It is easy for a parent to extract a kid from school, get lazy and let their kid do whatever they want during the day when they should be learning. not to mention some parents trust their kid enough to let the "take control of their own learning" in other words read this before I get home and then the parent never seems to follow up with what their child has been learning. If a parent needs to homeschool their child then the child should be on a strict study schedule just as if the kid were attending public school. There is nothing more irritating than a parent letting a kid drop out of public school and then failing to teach a child what they need to learn. If you have a parent that devotes the time and effort to teaching their child the right way then homeschool should be just as successfull as attending a public school.
i was actually homeschool in the 9th grade so i have some first had experiences with this. it didnt have to do with how i was learning but for other reasons. anyways i think that homeschooling is a good option especially for those that need to learn at their own rate. there also are other advantages as well but i do think that public schooling is the best option. it allows you to work with others and to gain much needed people skills. also you gain friends that you will have for the rest of your life.
I agree with both Paige and Byron about homeschooling. Paige because i think that when you choose to educate your children at home that you need to have a set curriculum and not get up at noon everyday...at my house when i was homeschooled we would get up at about 7 a.m. to start school and my mom was always very prepared with assignments for us and goals to accomplish...I know someone who "homeschooled" her children but all they ended up doing was learning how to share the ENTIRE year!!!...It's sad that homeschooling can be an abused form of education....
Byron I agree partly with you..when i was homeschooled i did miss my friends; i actually had a friend that was very upset with me that i didn't return to school for 6th grade and almost completley stopped talking to me.... but my brother was pulled out of public school becuase the other students were abusing him...he was always the one kid to be bullied and he even got a knife pulled on him at school...all becuase he was a very SMART child...So my mom felt for my brothers safety homeschooling was a smart choice for his education...he was homeschooled for about 4 years.
