Hola! I mean... Hello!
I would like to know how you feel about having Spanish written EVERYWHERE you look. Maybe for those of you that speak Spanish it's not a big deal, maybe it's a huge comfort.
I feel a little left out of the loop. Before I went on my 2 year excursion to Japan, the only thing that had another language written on it was a can of Pringles... I was surprised that when I got home (even though I was in my mother country again) I was only able to understand half of the billboards, magazines, and even things being broadcast on the radio.
My brother has a very strong opinion on this subject. One of the points he constantly made was along the lines of "If we don't want illegal immigrants in our country, why are we making it more convenient for them to live here by putting Spanish everywhere? If THEY want to live, work and be a part of OUR country they should take the time to learn the language that's spoken here!" He does have a valid point I think. Do you agree with my brother?

Really it does not bug me. I dont believe that spanish is taking the place for english by any means. I dont feel worried that Spanish is taking over the world :). I do though think that there is a lot of switching over to spanish in order to commmunicate with non-english speaking people. You need to learn English if you are going to live in America. In the beginning I can understand using your original language, but eventually you need to adapt to the language. I think it is beneifcial to learn Spanish because it is so common to come in contact with such individuals that speak only Spanish. When it all breaks down I figure people can speak what they want. All i know is that I speak English and very fluent Pig-Latin ha ha (Joking) and when it comes Spanish, it puzzles me. If people decide they want to live in America they should learn the language. If they choose not to then hey, they are the ones who will suffer when they can only talk to others that speak spanish. This idea makes shopping, recieving help or anything requiring communication with someone that does not speak Spanish hard. Plus I kinda like HOLA it slides off the tonge :).
So Paige what are your thoughts on what my brother said? Do you think we're making it easier for illegals to live here because it's getting to the points where they can do anything in Spanish?
Who exactly is we? I believe that no matter what "WE" try and do we cant stop illegal immigrants from speaking their language and coming here. No matter how one would love to control it, its not us common peoples jobs to control illegall immigration :). So your brothers oppinion is that "we" are making it easy for illegal immigrants but what about the many things that they cant do? I am curious to know exactly what things are becomming spanish oriented that illegal imigrants get to participate in? Because I dont really see that they have that privileged of a life compared to "legals". I think that I dont know who "we" is.
My opinion has changed on this matter since returning home from my two year adventure. I have looked at America in a different way. I think its OK for Spanish to be here. I become kind of disgusted at when people say this is "our" country and you should learn our language. With that being said isn't this America people.. "this land is your land this land my land???" Haven't we talked in class about how diverse America is, isn't America the land where people can come to and be free and live how they want to live?? I think people should definitely learn English now days because it is the world language, but why cant Americans take a little time and learn another language to help out someone that is new and fresh to this amazing country?
I believe that people whoo live in America should speak English. I also think that having everything in English and Spanish can cause people who only know spanish to be lazy and not learn Americas native language. But having both languages on products could promote learning english and spanish by being able to compare the languages right in front of ones eyes.
I would have to agree that the people that come here to America need to learn the language and laws of the land. In Japan they don't have to accommodate for different cultures because the people that move to Japan are expected to learn the language. It’s not the other way around for a reason. I am fine if people move to America they just need to become American.
how do you become an American?
This is a really good dialogue, guys. Keep it up.

Sorry i keep commenting on this but its been going through my mind a lot. I think this is one of those things where something may be illegal but yet ethical. The more i think about it the more pros and cons come into my mind. for example, many of the immigrants that come over take a lot of our jobs that we wouldn't normally do, and yes there is an amount of these jobs that are payed under the table, but there are a lot that are not under the table which in effect helps pay taxes. I've also taken into consideration that a lot of these immigrants will send money home to there family which doesn't help out America very much at all. But at the same time if you were to somehow send all of these immigrants home on buses then America would have all of these so to say crappy jobs become available again that we didn't want to do before. So this matter can go both ways in a lot of different aspects. As far as the Spanish being in America... i honestly don't think that is going to keep immigrants from wanting to come here. I talked to a man in Mazatlan, Mexico once and he said that visiting America for a few days was like paradise for him and his family. we have an amazing country with so much opportunity, and these immigrants are just trying to be apart of it. they are after all fellow HUMAN BEINGS that live on the same dirt we do, we are just separated by a line in the sand.
Go MATT WOOT! WOOT! he makes many valid points :)
