Do we really want to become a socialist society?

I am proud to be an american. And always have been but seeing were this country is going scares me. As I listen to the politicians talk about health care and "sharing the wealth" I wonder weather or not the majority of people know that we are a republic and not socialists.  The definition of socialism is a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, ect. in the community as a whole. Now this might not sound bad to some such as the French, but as an American I believe that you should be able to own your own, land, and run a business and if you make money you have the right to keep that money. I am not rich by any means and currently my family struggles to make the money to pay our bills, but that does not mean that I think that Bill Gates should cut me a check just because he has the money. And if you do then maybe you need to rethink your citizenship.

You're confusing socialism with communism. To me socialism is making sure that every citizen of a certain country is taken care of. Isn't America all about equal rights? Give people the right to health care no matter what their situation in life! We're all humans after all. Are you going to let some homeless man die in the gutter because he doesn't have any money?
I lived in England, a country that isn't completely socialist but it has socialist tendencies like universal health care and staggered taxes. I lived there for eight years and I myself used the universal health care. While there were some glitches in the system, for example long waits for appointments, ultimately it worked. People got taken care of and they didn't have to die because they couldn't afford operations or medication they needed.
In England there are still rich people and poor people. There is a class system and people can in fact own their own land, taxes are just higher but on the other hand you don't pay for health insurance and for every child you have you are given money to help take care of them.
I'm sure that if you were in a situation where you or a loved one couldn't afford medication or an operation you'd wish for a socialistic society too.

Another name for Socialism is soft communism just to set things strait. The fact that the government is sticking there hands in your pockets because Joe Shmoe was too lazy to work is called communism. I am living proof that money is easy to come by, if you are willing to work for it. It is great and all that the communist liberals want to make life fair for all people, but wait it never will be. About half of the world is in a third world; which means they have to work for what they get! Now, if you make it available for Joe Shmoe to have every thing paid because he doesn't want to work the soft communistic government of socialism has to get the money form some where, and ther will take the money to pay for Joe from Bill Lamock Who Works "his" butt off for what "he" is earning! It disgusts me that the United States has fallen into lock step with the values of communism; something needs to be done to stop it!

Just so you know I got the definition of socialism from the dictionary. There is a reason that as Americans we throw out the British and now what we should go back to that? I don't think so. Our founding fathers loved this country and fought to make it a great country with freedoms we all enjoy. By going to a "spread the wealth" mentality we are losing sight of what so many people have fought and died for. We are Americans and that used to mean ownership, statesmanship, and the pursuit of happiness. Just because it sounds easier to allow the government to take over health care, to nationalize banks, and to have some else make your decisions does NOT mean that we should stop fighting to see America continue to be the great country she is!

First of all, money is NOT always easy to come by. Maybe if you're a white male between the ages of 18 and 45 it is . . . Do you know how many massive lay offs there have been within the last few weeks?
You just seem a little offended at the idea of sharing your own money to help others . . . You're not thinking about the people that this money helps.
If someone comes in on hard times they need a little help with medical bills and housing and things like that. They'll get back on their feet, I've seen it happen many times. Just put yourself in someone else's shoes for ONE moment and you'll understand.
As for the "throwing out the British" someone mentioned before, I don't see how that's relevant. It's great that your patriotic but it shouldn't be your default setting. It seems like whenever most Americans hear someone hinting at something they don't like they automatically say "That's un-american!" but the American way isn't always the right way. That's why some things need to change in this country. Most foreign countries have an awful view of America right now. We used to be the good guys and now a lot of people see us as the bad guys. I don't want that for this country. I agree that America is a great country but it is not the only great country. We need to learn from other's example and that means trying new things but this country is so unflinchingly rigid about so many things.
Pressure is building up on America as times get tougher. We need to "go with the flow" and bend our ways a little more rather than being rigid and brittle and eventually snapping and falling to bits.
Back to my original point: We're all humans and we should WANT to help other humans. People are too attached to their money.
I think denying the idea of socialism is like refusing to give a beggar on the street money. You can look at them and think "They'll probably just spend it on booze." but you never know how much they really need your help. Some people just walk by and ignore the pitiful state of society but others stop and give some of what they have.
As a society we can't ignore the suffering going on in our own backyard! The first thing a hospital asks you shouldn't be: "Do you have insurance?" it should be: "How can I help you feel better?"
I'm not saying that everyone needs to be on the same level, that'll never happen. I'm just saying that there is suffering and pain going on out there and if you can help you should. It makes ME sick that people don't want to help others just because it's the right things to do. Something needs to be done about THAT!

P.S. Yeah, I saw that you got the definition of socialism from the dictionary because I looked up socialism in the dictionary as well and got the exact same definition but I looked it up in several other dictionaries as well and different dictionaries give you different definitions of socialism so it can get a little ambiguous.

I see it kinda like this: If one was to work at a restaurant and worked a table and did a very good job and the customer was pleased but then said.. "Hey I'm just gonna go ahead and give your tip to the bum out on the street does that sound alright??" What would you say? You worked hard for the money, the bum on the street didn't. Anyone in this country can accomplish what they want if they put forth the effort. Let those that have the desire earn what they deserve.
